Interview with Tyrelle Blair of the Maine Red Claws

DLD: How did you spend your summer?
TB44: Working on my game and just trying to get stronger.

DLD: What part of your game have you been working on improving the most?
TB44: Improving my range on my jump shot.

DLD: How comfortable are you in training camp so far?
TB44: Two a days are tough but it will pay off in the long run.

DLD: How is it it different than you expected?
TB44: I expected it to be tough, so it is what I expected so far.

DLD: Is it faster pace?
TB44: The pace is very up temp.

DLD: Where was your favorite place to play in college?
TB44: UNC and Kansas has very passionate fans, so playing there was very impressive.

DLD: You nearly averaged a triple-double (10pts, 11 reb, 10 blk) in high school. How big would it be if you were to achieve that rare stat during a game this season?
TB44: Now its on a pro level so it would mean much more.

DLD: After going to high school, Florida State was your number one choice for college, unfortunately they didn’t recruit you eventually leading you to Boston College. Do you hold any kind of grudge against them?
TB44: Not at all, they didn't think that I was good enough which is fine. It also set me up to hit the game winning shot against them as well.

DLD: What impacted your decision to come to the D-League after spending a year in Ukraine?
TB44: If you want to make an impression on the NBA the best way to do it would be to play in the D-League, you can easily get lost in Europe.

DLD: What is the biggest difference between what you have seen so far in the D-League and last year in Ukraine ?
TB44: The game is refereed much differently and the pace is faster here in the D-League.

DLD: In 2008 you had the opportunity to play with the Indiana Pacers summer league team along side a former D-League star Earl Calloway. Did you talk with him about his time in the D-League?
TB44: We just practiced and went back to the hotel, didn't talk to him that much.

DLD: Who has had the biggest influence in your life?
TB44: God first, but I have strong group of friends and family that form a support cushion for me.

DLD: Whose the funniest guys you’ve played with?
TB44: Tony Bobbit by far.

DLD: If you weren’t a profession basketball player what career would you be in?
TB44: I'm a communications major so possibly journalism or maybe marketing.

DLD: Who do you pattern your game after?
TB44: I like to watch Tim Duncan And Kevin Garnett, I am not as good as them but I like to watch their footwork and take pieces from their games.

DLD: What are your goals for the upcoming season?
TB44: I just want to impact the game when I step on the court and help my team win games.

DLD: What is your favorite Quote?
TB44: I write poetry and I also am big on quotes so trying to pick one would be tough.

DLD: Why do you wear 44?
TB44: I always liked four in high school, but that number was unavailable so I got 44. I feel as though I am twice the player now so that's why I still wear it.

DLD: Random Questions:

Love to spend money on?
Do you speak a 2nd Language?
I like lucky charms and captain crunch. I spend money on video games and music. I took Spanish in high school and college but do not speak it very well.

Exclusive Photos From Bayhawks Preseason Game

Big shoutout to Bubbaluv for hooking us up with these pictures from the Erie Bayhawks and Fortwayne Mad Ants preseason game.

The Erie BayHawks, down by as many as 17, bounced back to defeat the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in a 106-100 victory in a pre-season exhibition game held at Meadville Area Senior High School.

The same two teams will square off in the season opener next Friday, November 27 in Fort Wayne. Erie's home opener is set for December 12 at the Tullio Arena vs. the expansion Maine Red Claws.

Ctrl V from BTBH: Thoughts on the Expanded D-League Playoff Format

Last year, the BayHawks qualified for the playoffs in their first D-League season. That's quite an achievement for an expansion franchise, even in a league of where 8 of the 16 teams qualify for the postseason.

Unfortunately, the fans in Erie didn't get to enjoy their team's playoff berth as Erie's playoff experience was a one-and-done game halfway across the country against the eventual D-League champion Colorado 14ers. And just like that, Erie's season was over.

If the BayHawks are fortunate enough to make a return trip to the postseason in their second season, the fans and the team will be guaranteed at least one home game...

The Los Angeles D-Fenders acquired Idaho Stampede's second round (18th overall) draft pick, Dar Tucker, while the team dealt center Earl Barron to the Iowa Energy. The Stampede acquired forward Anthony Tolliver from the Energy in the deal.

"I am excited about the trade that occurred this morning. Tucker is a young player with a great deal of talent and I am excited to coach him. I think we have a great team that is beginning to develop and look forward to training camp next week," said D-Fenders Head Coach, Chucky Brown.

Day After Trades

The Idaho Stampede announced today they have traded second round draft pick, Dar Tucker to the Los Angeles D-Fenders. In part of a three team trade, Tucker will go to the D-Fenders who have traded center Earl Barron to the Iowa Energy. In exchange, Idaho picks up center Anthony Tolliver who will join the Stampede in training camp on November 16th.

"I am excited to add Anthony to the Stampede roster," said Stampede Head Coach Bob MacKinnon. "With his NBA experience, he is someone who I felt would have been a top five pick in the Development League Draft. Fans in the Treasure Valley will love to watch Anthony play and he will be a great addition to our team."

The Reno Bighorns have acquired 6-9 forward Marcus Hubbard from the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in exchange for yesterday's second-round draft selection Haminn Quaintance, the Bighorns announced today. In exchange for Hubbard, the Bighorns parted ways with Quaintance, a 6-7 forward out of Kent State.

The Fort Wayne Mad Ants announced today that they have traded first round pick Alade Aminu, to the Erie Bayhawks for former Notre Dame standout Rob Kurz, who played last season for the Golden State Warriors of the NBA.

NBA D-League Q&A: Mark Madsen, Utah Flash

The day after the coaching announcement he flew from Minnesota to Atlanta, where NBAdleague.com's Davina Sutton caught up with Madsen on his first day of work during Flash’s final open tryouts of the season.

The announcement was made just yesterday, and then you are here right away at tryouts?

"Yup, I am here right away at tryouts. I had a lot of conversations with Brad Jones (Flash head coach) and it just seemed like a great fit. It’s a real honor to be apart of the Flash organization."

Can you talk about your decision to transition from player to coach?

"There was a period where I was really debating if I wanted to play this next season. The reality is that NBA teams this season are carrying 13 players, and in the past I have been the 14th or 15th man. So that affected my decision. I also had an offer to go over and play in Greece, but it really came down to my discussions with Brad Jones and getting to know the organization of the Flash. It just seemed like a great fit."

How long has this been in the works?

"It’s only been in the works a few weeks."

While playing did you think that coaching was going to be your next career move?

"I have always wanted to get into coaching, but to be honest, I wasn’t exactly planning to jumping into it right away. But as training camp got closer and as I gauged the marketplace for a 6’9” guy with my skill level, like I said, reality settled in. Then this coaching opportunity was something that materialized, and it’s really something that’s exciting to me."

You were in the big leagues and the NBA D-League is about development—so what do you think you can bring to your team?

"Well in just getting to know the guys, I know we have some great players. The second thing is that I played for some great coaches and most importantly I played with some great players—Kevin Garnett, Kobe, Shaq, Sam Cassell—and so I hope to convey that even though I could never do the things those players did, I have watched them very closely. I feel like I will be able to share a little bit of their game with some of these athletes. If I can show one of these great players something that Kevin Garnett did, then you know what, that’s going to make me really happy because Kevin is all about sharing his game. It’s all about making the game better. It’s all about making these players better."

Coming from a place where these players want to be, how do you think you can relate to them—especially the ones who have been fighting for a long time?

You announced your decision via your personal website, so I guess you are a believer in connecting with fans through social media?

So what do you anticipate this year as a rookie coach to bring? So what do you anticipate this year as a rookie coach to bring?

I know that you just made this transition and your feet are barely wet, but do you envision bigger coaching ambitions?

Erie Bayhawks to host showcase

ERIE - The NBA Development League Erie BayHawks have set a series of double and triple headers, that will pair BayHawks games with local boys and girls high school games.

"We felt it was a perfect opportunity to showcase the next generation of players and give the players a taste of the excitement of playing on the BayHawks' court, in front of a Tullio Arena crowd,"said BayHawks president Matt Bresee. "It also presents a great value to our fans, with the chance to see two or three games for the price of one ticket."

Reno Bighorns hold open tryouts

Seventeen players participated in the Reno Bighorns' open tryouts for a shot to suit up for the team's second season Sunday at the Reno Athletic Club.

"What we try to do is evaluate the talent of the guys who really want to come out and see if they are at a level that can help us," Bighorns coach Jay Humphries said.
The 21/2-hour tryout drew a variety of athletes, including local players, who were put through different drills and a scrimmage. They were tested on stamina, shooting and transition skills in the first half of the tryout before putting it all together in a game.

Reporters Shot At The NBA D-League

When I heard one of the teams was holding an open tryout, I decided to take a shot.

Most players at the Red Claws open tryout don’t get an immediate answer about their fate, but I need to know so I pose the same question to Head Coach Austin Ainge, who laughed.

“No chance. I’m sorry, I’m sorry. The athleticism isn’t quite up to par. If you were about 6’8” I think you’d have a chance,” said Ainge.

Unfortunately, I have my answer, but the rest of the players will have to wait to find out if they’ll be taking the next step to the NBA.

D-League Draft Order Announced

Sept. 29, 2009 - New York – The Albuquerque Thunderbirds won the 2009 NBA Development League’s Draft lottery and will have the first overall selection in the 2009 NBA D-League draft next month. The lottery took place in Dallas, TX today at the League’s annual coaches meetings.

The order of the first round will be:
